Blogging

Why do people blog? What's the point? Is it to keep in touch? Keep updated? Show you care? Rant? Respond to people?

I've watched the comments on people's blogs, lack of comments on other people's blogs, watched who comments on who's and I wonder why? What prompts some people to comment on some blogs and not on others? Is it the topic? Is it a way to show your love or appreciation for someone? Do we think about how our comments or lack of comments impact other people? Does it impact us?

I think blogging can be great. I also think it can make us lazy. Instead of contacting someone to tell them you are thinking of them, or you miss them, we just comment on their blog. Even worse, we sometimes assume they somehow know you are reading their blog. How did we find out about each other before blogging? Did we care but it was too inconvenient to find out?

Why do you blog? Why do you comment? Is blogging good or bad for a community?

I generally blog about my family and I do so for two main reasons: 1) A journal to keep track that I can look back at as a record of their lives. 2) for family and friends far away (like my 93 year old Grandma!) who don't get to see the kids enough. But then, I know I blog also because I know people like you are reading it and enjoy the stories. Sometimes I just need to vent or question things.

Comments - I generally comment on people's sites if I have something to add to the conversation or something really stuck out to me. I am more likely to comment on someone's site who doesn't have a lot of comments - if there is a lot of comments they don't need my two cents.

I personally love blogs.

Thanks Krista! I do love your blog - I don't know if I would have thought to record my family's life through blogging but it's something I hope can I keep up like you do - I think it's a great idea. So cool your grandma checks!

Hi Jaci!

You asked:
Why do you blog?

A. I blog because it gives me a chance to discuss some things that I feel very passionate about but that don't lend themselves to the casual conversations we typically have before and after the organized part of sunday evenings.

Why do you comment?

A. Sometimes to let someone know I care about their situation. Sometimes to encourage people to use the post for continuing conversation on the topic. Sometimes an attempt at humor. I usually don't post on the "here's what's new with us/me" posts because there isn't really anything to say in response. I appreciate them too though. (If I didn't want to know how someone was, I wouldn't be checking their blog.)

Is blogging good or bad for a community?

A. While not always painless, my experience with it has been very good for deep community; maybe not so good for community-lite though because that level of relating does not establish an adequate foundation of the deep genuine affection needed to support differing opinions. At least that's my opinion! LOL

How about you, Jaci? (Why do you blog or comment? Do you think blogging good or bad for a community?)

Personally I love reading blogs.
I find that you really get to see where people's mindspaces are at, which doesn't often come through 'hanging out'. Also, since you've posted about something, I'd feel more cool about asking you about it, rather than just walking up to you and entering into this deep conversation about social justice and the impact of global warming and the role of Julie Andrews through it all..or something :)
Maybe that's cheating and with time that could happen, but perhaps blogs are a great facilitator of that for now.
Alot of times I blog when I just need to get my thoughts down on paper (computer) to understand myself better, it might be more beneficial for me than to let others know about what's going on. I find that as I'm typing I'm brutally honest with myself and I'm learning about how to be a better person and more like Jesus through the process...
I love reading what you and others have to say...I don't check blogs enough...but you're right, I also don't hang out with you as much as I'd like either...
Great thoughts.

why I blog - because I view it as my online journal...to keep track of my weekly or daily routine, to share a funny story that might make another person who is blue laugh right out loud...or sometimes I blog about something really personal to my heart and maybe it will touch another..sometimes I even blog to vent...to write it down so I know I got it out and I can move forward with a particular topic.

WHY do I comment - because sometimes you will read something that touches you and your opinion, whether right or wrong, might impact another on a personal positive note......

and I love when people comment on my blog, positive, negative...imput is always great....

I blog for my personal reasons. I find it helps me keep track of what is going on in my life. I know I am too lazy to pick up a pen and write in a journal or a diary everyday, but I am on the computer every day, so it just makes it easy to type it all, instead of write it. Having said that, I am also a faster and more accurate typer, than my handwriting that is shameful.

As for comments? I comment when something that I read strikes me personally. Whether it relates to something that has happened to me, or I sympathize with what the person is blogging about, or whether I believe some truly valid points have been made that warrant praise, or maybe it's that I have a question or don't understand something. It is different every time. Or in this case, because you asked a question, and as a faithful reader of your blog, I decided to share some of my opinions, since you asked. :)
